The day in the life of a Lead Developer
20th January 2026

Six years is a serious milestone in tech time. Frameworks come and go, trends rise and fall, but the people who quietly keep shipping, improving, mentoring and caring about the craft are the ones who really shape a company. This month, we’re celebrating exactly that kind of impact as Kash marks his 6-year anniversary at Answer Digital 🎉

Meet Kash!

Kash is a Lead Developer in our engineering team, and while he’ll modestly tell you that he “writes code to build applications you use in a web browser,” the reality is far richer. His role sits right at the intersection of hands-on engineering, thoughtful leadership, and making sure the things we build actually work for real people in the real world.

On a day-to-day basis, Kash is usually deep in code, building new features and improving applications for our clients. Alongside that, he spends time mentoring junior developers and supporting small delivery teams. It’s a balance that takes patience, perspective, and a genuine enjoyment of helping others grow, all things Kash brings naturally.

What does your morning routine look like?

Like many working parents, Kash’s mornings are a carefully choreographed routine. Nursery drop-off for the little one, feeding the dog, and making a crucial brew before the day begins. Once work starts, things kick off with a morning stand-up, then it’s straight into tackling whatever ticket is at the top of the list. Time moves quickly when you’re in flow, and before long it’s already time for nursery pick-up again.

What project are you working on currently?

Right now, Kash is working on the National Digital Twin project, helping to build an open-source data catalogue. Starting from an existing open-source solution, his focus is on reskinning and shaping the application so it aligns with the programme’s branding and goals. It’s the kind of work that blends technical precision with a strong sense of purpose, making complex systems more usable, accessible, and coherent.

Ask Kash what the most satisfying moment of the day is and you’ll get a very developer-specific answer: when the code is merged and the ticket can finally be moved to DONE. That small but mighty moment of closure never gets old.

Staying focused in a busy role isn’t always easy, especially when project delivery is combined with internal initiatives and wider responsibilities. Kash’s approach is refreshingly practical. He breaks his work down into clear tasks, prioritises them, estimates time realistically, and tackles them one by one. Short breaks away from the screen help too, a reminder that sustainable productivity beats burnout every time.

From a skills perspective, Kash is currently sharpening his CI/CD and infrastructure knowledge, particularly around platforms like AWS and Azure. At the same time, he’s continuing to invest in the mentoring and leadership side of his role, an area he clearly values, and one where he’s already having a big impact.

What does 'outside of work Kash' look like?

When the laptop closes for the day, family comes first. Evenings are spent picking up his daughter, sorting dinner, and enjoying playtime together. Once she’s asleep, Kash switches gears entirely, dedicating a couple of peaceful hours to one of his favourite hobbies: painting miniatures. It’s meticulous, creative work, not unlike software development, just with more paint and fewer pull requests.

What powers your day?

Fuel for the day is simple and non-negotiable: coffee. Always coffee. Background noise usually comes courtesy of the Trapped Under Plastic podcast, which blends his love of miniature painting with something easygoing to listen to while working.

Biggest misconceptions about developing

One of the biggest misconceptions about Kash’s role, and about development more broadly, is that it’s just endless hours of typing code. In reality, being a Lead Developer means mentoring others, working closely with clients, shaping designs and plans, and helping drive capability forward across the company. The code matters, but so do the people, conversations, and decisions around it.

After six years with Answer Digital, Kash’s journey is a brilliant example of how technical excellence and human leadership go hand in hand. We’re incredibly grateful for the calm, thoughtful, and quietly impactful way he shows up every day.

Happy 6-year anniversary, Kash, and here’s to many more merges, brews, and beautifully painted miniatures ahead 👏
