This month we’re shining the spotlight on Matthew, one of Answer Digital’s talented DevOps Engineers, whose journey is a brilliant mix of cloud innovation, community spirit, and a deep love for the outdoors.
Describe your job in three words
Cloud. Repetition. Interesting.
It’s a simple summary, but one that perfectly captures the rhythm of life in DevOps, the blend of routine precision and constant problem-solving that keeps the systems we build running smoothly.
From NHS transformation to national impact
Matthew joined Answer as the DevOps Lead for a major NHS project, a huge undertaking that shaped his early career here and gave him a front-row seat to how technology can transform healthcare at scale.
Since then, he’s worked across several sectors, most recently on a Department for Business and Trade contract, expanding his expertise beyond health while continuing to champion DevOps best practice wherever he goes.
Career milestone
When asked what he’s most proud of, Matthew doesn’t hesitate, "running Answer’s latest DevOps Academy".
“From interviewing to seeing them start their first project, it’s been incredible watching that journey. My role is quite niche, so being able to share knowledge and see others grow has been really enriching.”
The best thing about the team
For Matthew, it’s all about collaboration and knowledge-sharing:
“I love being able to spread my DevOps knowledge. Anyone who wants to learn, I’m there for it. It’s what makes Answer such a great place to work.”
Before Answer: A different kind of engineering
Before DevOps came Scout Ops.
Matthew spent his weekends volunteering at Scout campsites, taking on everything from mowing lawns to running air rifle sessions, and even rebuilding the sewer system (true story). “It was a lot of hours,” he laughs, “but full of great memories.”
A love for adventure
When it comes to travel, Iceland takes the top spot.
“The views were amazing, especially the Northern Lights. And the Blue Lagoon is something you just can’t miss.”
A fun fact that surprises people
“I’m a Scout Leader.”
Not what you might expect from someone deep in the world of cloud architecture, but it’s a big part of who he is.
“Deep nerdy IT doesn’t usually go hand-in-hand with camping and Scouting, but I love it. It’s been a massive part of my life.”
Life outside of work
Between leading teams and raising two daughters, spare time is rare. But when it does appear, Matthew is usually either out in the wild with Scouts, or playing the space MMO EVE Online for a quick digital escape.
Dream job for a day
“A Peak District National Park Ranger.”
Given his love for the outdoors, that one makes perfect sense.
2025 goal
“To find the time to take my AZ-104 exam.” (We’re holding you to that one, Matthew.)
