Spotlight on Gary: Lead Solution Architech
At Answer Digital, we love celebrating the people who make a difference. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on Gary, our talented Lead Solution Architect, who joined us in 2023. With a career dedicated to transformational healthcare projects, Gary has already made a huge impact. Let’s get to know him a little better.
Gary’s role at Answer
When asked to describe his job in three words, Gary simply said:
"Drawing boxes IFKYK."
(For those not in the know, it’s an inside joke in the architecture world—those diagrams don’t draw themselves!)
Since joining, Gary has worked across several key projects, each bringing fresh challenges and opportunities:
GP Record Transfers – a great introduction to a new area of healthcare.
Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs) – helping InHealth integrate CDCs with NHS Trusts, even reconnecting with a former customer.
Laboratory Testing Interfaces – a deep dive into laboratory testing specifications.
NHS Genomics Medicine Service – his current role, working on the Unified Genomic Record, a project that brings together cutting-edge science and transformational healthcare change, exactly the kind of work Gary thrives on!
While he enjoys the variety, he’s hoping to stay in genomics for a while and see the long-term impact of the project.
A career milestone to be proud pf
Gary has always been passionate about transformational work, and one project stands out: his first large-scale PACS project in South Wales.
Transitioning hospitals from film-based imaging to fully digital was a massive change, improving the way clinicians work and ultimately benefiting patients. Seeing that first-hand impact made it one of his proudest career moments.
The best thing about the team
Gary values working with a supportive team, especially one that takes every opportunity to meet in person. Those in-person connections make a huge difference to collaboration and morale.
An unusual early job
Believe it or not, Gary was once a choir boy—which is surprising, given that, in his words, "I can’t sing!" It didn’t last long, but it’s certainly a fun fact!
A favourite travel destination
Gary’s favorite trip was to Egypt, where he toured along the Nile and spent time in Cairo. The history, architecture, and sheer mystery of how these ancient structures were built left a lasting impression.
A surprising fun fact
Gary is actually a certified Guide Runner for Visually Impaired runners—a testament to his dedication beyond the workplace!
A guilty pleasure TV show
For wholesome Sunday night viewing, Gary turns to The Great Pottery Throwdown—because sometimes you just need a bit of calm, creative inspiration.
A dream job for a day
If he could swap jobs for a day, Gary has two great picks:
- Mo Farah—but only if he could also inherit his legendary speed!
- Any Astronomer—because exploring the universe is just as fascinating as solving healthcare challenges.
Celebrating Gary
Gary’s expertise, passion for transformation, and willingness to support others make him an invaluable part of Answer Digital. Whether he's architecting solutions, guiding runners, or admiring ancient wonders, he brings curiosity and dedication to everything he does.
We’re lucky to have him—here’s to all the amazing work still to come.
