Optimising technology foundations to enable sustainable growth and diversification
- Re-risking investment
- Replatforming
- PE investment
Executive summary
Many fast-growing, investor-backed organisations reach a point where early technology decisions start to limit future growth. Systems built to move quickly can become fragile, hard to change and difficult to govern, creating risk just as the business looks to scale or diversify.
This case study shows how replatforming, when paired with clear governance and decision-making, can restore confidence, reduce operational risk and create the foundations for sustainable growth. The same principles apply across regulated and consumer-facing organisations balancing pace, complexity and commercial pressure.
The problem we solved
Preventx is the UK’s leading provider of sexual health testing services, operating across the UK and the Netherlands and trusted by both NHS and private sector partners. Rapid growth and new investment created opportunities to diversify into new products and markets.
However, the organisation’s technology platform had evolved organically around bespoke, home-grown systems. While this approach had supported early growth, it had become increasingly complex and difficult to change safely.
Making updates often had unintended knock-on effects elsewhere in the platform. Competing priorities and the absence of clear change management processes made it hard to assess which initiatives were commercially viable before committing time and budget. As Preventx looked to expand into new geographies and services, operational risk was increasing rather than decreasing.
The business needed modern platform foundations and stronger governance to support growth with confidence.
What we did
Answer Digital partnered with Preventx to help reset its technology foundations and strengthen how change decisions were made.
We worked closely with Preventx’s leadership and in-house development teams to design a new platform architecture that could support current UK operations while enabling future international expansion. Alongside this, we introduced clear change management and prioritisation processes, helping the business assess initiatives against commercial and operational goals.
Our role extended beyond architecture. We provided senior business analysis, delivery leadership and architectural oversight to bridge the gap between executive ambition and day-to-day delivery. This included creating roadmaps, architectural guardrails and documentation that reduced wasted effort and increased delivery confidence.
The long-term impact
Although Preventx’s planned expansion into the US did not progress commercially, the platform foundations designed during the engagement are now being embedded across the UK business.
Legacy systems are being modernised in a controlled way, reducing operational risk and improving flexibility. Governance and change processes are stronger, enabling the organisation to focus on viable opportunities and avoid costly missteps.
Operational efficiency has improved. For example, manual financial reporting that previously took hours each week has been automated, freeing leadership time for strategic decision-making. Collaboration between technology and commercial teams has strengthened, rebuilding trust and improving alignment with customers.
The work also provided increased visibility and assurance for private equity investors, supporting confidence in Preventx’s technology roadmap and investment decisions.
